Time Flies When You're Getting Your Butt Kicked

I love what I do. I love what I do.

This is the mantra with which I start every day.

Three German Shepherds sleep in our bedroom with us, along with my daughter of course. There are various sounds--groaning, thumping, panting, belching, and, yes, farting--that periodically echo through the quiet darkness. And the dogs are even worse!

There is dog hair everywhere. EVERYWHERE. For extra fun in the winter, the dogs track in muddy water which dries and leaves behind dust that then gets stirred up and settles on everything. I could literally dust every single day. I mean, I don't, but I could. I have to run the sweeper every day.

Don't even get me started on my yard. Our house is next to the creek and our yard can get a bit swampy even in summer. Once all the grass dies, there is no hope of the delicate soil standing up against the relentless pounding, digging, rolling, and running of twenty-four massive paws. In an attempt to stop the dogs from getting completely covered in mud, we spread straw all over our yard. It works pretty well, with one caveat. Now they are tracking straw into the house to the point where I feel like I'm in medieval peasant woman's home.

And the dogs themselves! I have a full range of personalities here. Sometimes they clash. I can put down ten of the exact same chew, and within minutes they will be trying to steal one from their buddy and causing some sort of ruckus.

This is just the normal stuff. I haven't even mentioned vet trips, training sessions that sometimes end in less than stellar fashion, and the disappointment and frustration that can come from working in rescue.

And I have a life outside of the non profit. My daughter's health and the health of my elderly grandparents are always of concern. Also--joy of joys!--I have a granddaughter on the way!

Long story short--the dogs never get neglected, but lots of our public contact does. We don't make social media posts as often as we should. I can't believe how long it has been since I've posted a blog post to keep you guys in the loop. But never fear--we are here. We are working and training every day to help the dogs and the people who are depending on them. We might be slow to answer an email or a message, but we will. And when we tell you we will be there for you when you need us, we mean it.

Because it's true. I love what I do.
